With a PhD in Art and Science and a unique focus on animal perception, her practice examines how horses perceive the world, particularly through vision, and how this understanding can be conveyed to humans to enhance equine welfare.
Studying and drawing horses from life is fundamental to Dr. Sherratt’s practice. Careful observation of equine anatomy and movement informs her work. This inspiration began in her childhood in Yorkshire, where she often visited a relative who was a racehorse trainer. Due to a childhood illness that prevented her from riding horses, Dr. Sherratt turned to drawing horses, which has been a lifelong concern.
“My practice is not studio-based; rather, it involves observing and drawing horses from life. This process deepens my understanding of how horses use their sensory apparatus, which motivates my art and science research and informs my equine art practice. Horses are sentient beings and individuals, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to get to know them. I am also grateful to work with exceptional equine professionals whose dedication and care for horses, as well as their acceptance of my unique research methods, have been remarkable.”
